Evaluation- Q1

In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our final product is a horror genre. In order for our film sell to our audience we realised that we had to conform to the stereotypes of our chosen genre which is Horror. We came to a realisation that, all horror films in their title sequences have elements which make it much easier for the audience to realise that it is a horror movie. In a horror movie the emotion of which the characters should feel is tension, scared and distraught. This is exactly what our movie provided.

Firstly, conventions of a horror genre include:
  • flashback, this is images/scenes of what events that have already have already occurred. It is used to either to show how these 'events' haunt our characters or play as a reminder to our audience.
  • Chase, is most commonly used in horror movies. Its a chase between the character and the 'villain'. This creates suspension and more of eerie atmosphere.
  • planning of/establishing shot, is used to introduce the a new scene. It shows the audience the settings of each scene.
  • Narrations, the telling of a story. (voice-over)
  • Action scene's are typically shown in horror movies. Consisting of a lot of movement and changing of the scenes.
  • Mise-en-scene, this is what is in that particular scene. Props//makeup//angels//
  • Soundtrack in a horror movie is very important. As it creates the scary, horror movie whilst watching it. These could consist of a heart beating, running, screams etc.

In our horror movie, we conformed to a lot of horror conventions. For example, we included a chase scene, between our main character and her attacker. We decided to use a chase scene because we wanted our audience to know what exactly our character was running away from. Also adding a chase scene creates more of a suspense. We took this idea from our prelim activity we did at the start of the course. Our one was about Se7en. Se7en had lots of small snippets and lots of chase scene which whilst we were watching thought created a suspenseful atmosphere. We also included lots of flashbacks, as these illustrate how our actress ended up escaping. In our mise en scene, we made sure to conform to all of stereotypes of a horror movie. Examples, dark room, blood, blindfolded, tied up, knife and scary objects. We knew that if anyone was watching our film they would instantly be able to tell its a horror movie. So its easily recognisable. Also when we added our credits we made sure that it was written in a white font, to illustrate the seriousness and scariness of this film.
Here are a screenshots of some of the conventions we conformed too:

This is our dangerous weapons used to hurt our character. This angle is a medium angle which clearly shows what equipment used to harm the actress.
Pools of blood ,illustrating someone is seriously hurt.
Ass you can see here is our attacker, the camera angle is showing the bottom half to illustrate the anonymity of who could this be and their reason behind this attack.

Middle of a chase.
This is a shot taken from behind, this looks like as if the audience are running with our actress, going along with the action and chase.
Here are the shots from the se7en title sequence we took ideas from:

This here was the soundtrack we used in our video, this was the main tune for the whole of the film. However we did have other sounds.

Here is a print screen of all the different sounds we used in our video. These sounds are all stereotypical in a horror movie, which create a dark, gloomy, scary atmosphere.
Our media product 'escaping' conforms to the conventions of real horror movies as we thought as a group our target audience 16-35 year olds would want to watch something that is easily recognisable. However, with that being said we didn't want to be boring and do the same old thing. We thought that instead of having long, studious shots why not have a quick, fast snap shots and have these repeated a couple of times. This way the shots would match the tempo of our soundtrack. Making it even more visual and entertaining for our audience.
