'How does your media product represent particular social groups?'
Firstly representation in media, is the way the media re-presents individuals, groups, events and issues.
In our title sequence the social group we are trying to represent is young people. With that being said to be more specific people aged 16-21. The reason why we decided to represent these individuals is because we as media directors can empathise with them as we are in the same age group. Also from our research we came to conclusion, young people are placed at the heart of being the main characters in horror movies. This is mainly because of their vulnerability and innocence.
For example the horror movie 'Cabin the woods' main characters were a bunch of university friends. Another example is the original movie Scream, a bunch of high schoolers were targeted.
Our social class is working class female/male aged 16-21. The reason behind this social class is our idea of your typical young person is portrayed in this title sequence. Someone who is ordinary, some one who does the same thing you and I do on a day to day basis. As a group we thought that if that was portrayed in the movie then our target audience who are in the age range can relate.
Our representation is positive and negative. As the reasons why young people are targeted for horror movies are because of the fact that their not an adult yet. So in a way, this is exposing the vulnerability which young people can face in society. However it could be a good thing as because its a common theme in horror movies, and we have decided to conform to it many people would enjoy it.
In a typical horror movie the main character would be a young, white, blonde women in her early teens, however we broke the stereotypes a little bit and decided to have a young female with brown hair, who is asian.
With the villain we decided to conform to the stereotypes of having a young, black, male with tall and strong built.
