29. Sound Design Planning

29. Sound Design Planning

Genre: Horror

The soundscape includes chewing gum being chewed, a pen being tapped on a table and someone typing on the keyboard at a fast pace. The reason why we used these sound examples was to build tension; alongside suspenseful music, it would have built tension alluding to a climactic moment. This a typical convention of our chosen genre that is horror, due to the simplistic sounds used which create a good build up effect.

Sound Desigh Ideas Taask 29 (Planning)

Making sounds using sound effects

Door open/closing
Rain falling
Lighting strike/thunder

A woman is trying to escape from a haunted house where she was held for ransom. She finds the door opens it its raining and thunder. Her killer opens the door and runs after her...

These sounds are all typical of the horror movie genre, as they build tension and create suspense which in turn creates a suspenseful and fearful atmosphere. As sound contributes majorly to a film, the sound will influence how the audience views the visuals and how much they are affected by the horror.

Target audience. Task 12 (planning)

Target audience

What is a target audience?

The assembled spectators or listeners at a public event such as a play, film, concert, or meeting.

Definition of Target audience:

A particular group at which a product such as a film or advertisement is aimed.

Why is it useful to have a target audience?

It is important to have target audience because it allows you as the director to know who your filming for and what they would like. Also because you have a target audience you can make it more entertaining and interesting so more people would want to watch it. Also not having a target audience would be hard for when producing a film as this is because you will find it difficult to add certain elements in your production that please your viewers. .

Audiences and different genre:

Romance:
  • This genre appeals more towards women between the ages of 16 to 35 who have a disposable income. Preferably they would be interested in themes of love and relationships.

Crime/ Gangster:
  • Males between the ages of 18 to 40
  • Fantasy of killing the bad and protecting the good
Action/thriller:
  • Males between the ages of 10+
  • find it intriguing and interesting

Task 23 Initial Ideas

Initial Ideas

Task 26 Target Audience Preference

Target Audience Preference
Both interviewees had very different genre preference and their ideas about how films should appeal to their age group. Nevertheless they were both were aware that the Comedy genre is popular amongst their age group. In a previous task our survey monkey results revealed that this was a more preferred genre also which corresponds with our interviews. We will still reevaluate our genre options before coming to a final decision.

My Title Sequence Ideas- Task 24

My Title Sequence Ideas

My chosen genre for my film is comedy and this will be challenging for me to ensure that it shows through in my title sequence. However I will set up a story for my audience to build an expectation of the rest of the film. For the outline of my film I will be presenting the main characters in the film; the sequence begins with a small gathering of the characters and they are having a very humorous informal conversation. As this is my first individual idea, there will be more ideas that I want to explore, so that my title sequence has the conventions of the comedy genre. The overall storyline focuses in the life of group of people and their friendship. It is supposed to lighthearted and it is not supposed to be taken seriously. It will be difficult such serious themes as relationships and life alongside the genre of comedy but I will venture into more ideas.
