My title sequence. -Task 24.

My title sequence

Target audience
My target audience will be adults from the age of 18+.

Genre
I have decided the genre of my title sequence will be based around horror/thriller, this is because i enjoy watching movies surrounding this genre and I believe it will attract my target audience resulting in a successful film being made.

storyline ideas/initial plot

idea 1:
my first idea is that, in the beginning of the title sequence, i want the film company to be given credit, and soon after i want the narrator to describe whats happening (not entirely sure if there will be a narrator)

i want there to be the sound of bells playing gently in a big, homly looking house. i then want a little girl to slowly walk past the corridor in the house with her hair(straight hair) flipped backwards wearing a white gown, and just as she reaches her room i want her to look in the mirror in the hallway and fix herself up eg: tie her hair up and go to bed as if theres nothing wrong with her.

Idea 2:

Blogging health check 1 Task 22

This is my first blogging health check I have received form my teacher. As you can see that I need to be more analytical. So with that being said I need to explain my reasons, and why a certain task has helped me. Also i need to be more consistent with my blogs.

Summarise findings of the genre conventions..

Genre Shortlist

The 3 genres i am interested in looking at and maybe consider using one in my film are:
  • Action
  • Horror
  • Comedy
The reason i chose these genres are due to research in the previous tasks which indicate that these genres are most popular and  do take an interest in them.

My ideas for a Title Sequence - Task 24 (Planning)

Title sequence
I have thought of a couple ideas to to do with a interesting opening scene. One them was to have a main shot which keeps flashing to other shots for a short second then back to this man shot and i concluded that this man shot would be a girls running through a woodland area. Dong his will allow or group to have a very varied opening scene in terms of shots.

The idea i was thinking of was a girl running through an empty forest with flashbacks of what happened before this scene and will explain why she is running. This is also good because it fits within the genre we chose as a group which was horror so this title sequence will fit in very nicely.

To conclude hopefully this will be a good title sequence to work with.

Remake Evaluation. Task 21

Evaluation
.
In conclusion to our Se7en remake title sequence, we believe that we could have improved in such features such as
-Props
-Variety of camera shots
-Editing (pace)
-Text
-Organisation

We believe this because we found that the shots were too long which made the title sequence less interesting and upbeat like the opening of Se7en. Adding a variety of shots with different lengths would have made  the title sequence seem more upbeat and fact paced  going along with what was presented in the `Se7en' title sequence.

The editing was quite difficult  due the fact that we were very knew to the software needed to edit our visuals; this was expected because of the time frame and lack of experience. In order to improve we identified that we would have to put in more time and do research on the computer software provided in order to know the features useful to us related to our title sequence.

For organisation skills, it would be useful if we had more of a set plan in order to create a smooth process of filming editing and most of all  editing to create the final product. Initially we designed a useful storyboard which allowed us to know what we would move onto step by step however,  we didn't use that many descriptions making it difficult to know exactly what we had to move on in terms of filming.

From making our remake we have learnt that there are a lot of very vital elements to film making and it is imperative that we become accustomed to the different software and resources available for creating our title sequence. In terms of planning, we have recognised that we would need more extensive planning so we know the sequence of filming, editing etc.

Practical remake evidence (storyboard) Task 18

Evidence of our story board:

As you can see that this is the beginning of remade title sequence. This depicts the eerie theme of the film from the onset with the first props of blades and other sharp objects. It was absolutely paramount to us that we were able to get our props right so that they put across what the original title sequence did, by using those type of props.

This is the second part of the title sequence, which further illustrates the use of sinister looking objects, which become symbolic of what the rest of the film will be about. For instance the very messy handwriting already creates the impression that there is to be a very disorientated kind of character on the film.

This is the third section of the sequence which furtherly creates a very sinister and scary mood and atmosphere.

This illustrates more terrifying themes that set up an expectation in the viewer of what the film will be about. It was imperative that we too were able to set up expectations, but also not give too much away; the same way Se7en does.

Lastly, this is the final scene from the title sequence.

Title sequence conclusions -Task 7.

From research i have learnt that the titles used in a title sequence are very important as it credits members involved in the making of the production and it presents important characters within the movie to the audience. A strong title sequence portrays an image of the type of film it is going to be, it can also indicate the genre of the movie. A powerful title sequence can have  a huge impact as it will show to the audience perhaps the genre of the movie. title sequence also help to give importance to certain character and crew members as they are given credit strategically, in a way which the audience can identify them as being a crucial member of the production.

Target audience research -Task 12.

                                                    TARGET AUDIENCE

Target audience is a particular group  your project is aimed at. For example the target audience for a teen comedy film will be mainly teenagers from the age of perhaps thirteen onwards.

Target audience interviews:
we interviewed people of our age group (16 upwards) also people of the elder generation (25+) to get a more balamced result on who is more likely to watch our movie. Our results showed that..

Survey monkey results:

Conclusion:
We are most likely to base our movie on the horror/thriller genre because through research we have learnt that this genre is most appealing to teenagers of our age and above also it is most likely to attract our target audience.

Popular Genres:

Horror/Thriller
Romantic comedy
Action

The importance of sound in a film -Task 15.

Why is sound so important in a film?

Sound is one of the biggest element in the production of  film making because it makes up half of the film and people normally base their judgement on the film looking at the quality of the sound used.

Sound helps the audience identify the genre of the movie as well as the type of characters. For example when characters are introduced the audience can identify the good and the bad just buy listening to the sound that plays when they make an appearance.

The quality of the sound is also important because it adds to the film for example if a scary scene is coming on the screen the audience want to hear loud, dramatic sounds because it will increase the level of tension and excitement making them much eager to continue watching the movie, whereas if the sound was to be dull and quiet the horror movie would not manipulate the mood and emotion it was aiming for because it may not be thrilling resulting in a poor movie, not living up to its expectations.

Poor sound quality is noticed immediately therefore the sound in a movie needs to be distinct and explicit to its audience.
Sound is a key factor in film producing because it can potentially lead us to the next scene, or the next element of the film and if the sound is poor it will cause the audience to lose interest in the film.

Favourite film analysis. -Task 8.

SHE'S THE MAN

This movie is one of my favourite movies because its a romantic comedy based around a girl (Viola) who desperately wants to play football however is not allowed to but this does not stop her from participating in her favourite hobby. She's eager to prove her ex-boyfriend and football captain wrong even if it means she has to pretend to be her brother and take on a double role of a man and woman.

The Title sequence Analysis

in the opening of the film the film production company are given credit which is 'Dreamworks' and 'Lakeshore Entertainment', soon after it goes straight into the film title sequence. Some members of the film production are given credit, whilst there is music playing in the background. Little snippets of the movie are being shown and it freezes at certain points in the title sequence. later it goes into the opening of the film and the rest of the members involved in the production of 'She's The Man' are given credit towards the end, it goes in a listed order. The order of the credit goes in:

1. Unit production managers
2. First assistant director
3. Second assistant director
4. Cast
5. Crew
6. Visual effects by Rainmaker

Why is sound so important in film?
Sound is important because it tells us  60% of the story and influences the emotions created by the scene that they are used in or reflecting. Without sounds we wouldn't be able to understand what is happening and not only this but sound helps us as an audience stay interested.

Sound is used to create an atmosphere or build up tension or to lead us in to the next scene. Sound allows us to connect more with the movie gives us information subliminally. It can also be used to highlight emotions within certain characters. An example of this would be when movies use specific songs to represent a time period. This allows us to become more interested in the movie as it creates realism. Sound s also important as it outlines the story. This means it lets us understand  the film better.

Macro and Micro film analysis -Task 13 (Research)

Macro and Micro film analysis of:

  • Coraline
  • Lolita (1997)
  • Friday After Next

    Coraline
The title sequence for Coraline is a very complex one, presenting a lot of themes and setting a lot of expectations, through the use of camera shots and angles as well as a very dynamic use of sound as well as mise-en-scene. Initially the storyline is not revealed or hinted straight away, however from the very eerie backing sound and the gradual build-up of the music, it is expected that towards the middle of the sequence the prop (scary doll) holds a lot of significance; it also simply suggests that the movie will build up itself mysteriously. Alongside this various camera angles such as close ups, extreme close ups as well as camera shots like panning and zooms are used effectively to empathise the very sinister yet playful tone of the title sequence and overall film. Generally, the props and colours of the setting carry a very dull tone that does not look very attractive and this all adds to the very creepy tone that the filmmakers are aiming to show through to the audience in the title sequence.

    Order of Title Credits
The order of the title credits is very typical – The production company, the film title (Coraline), the main character (Dakota Fanning) followed by other supporting roles, lead animators and artists, supervisors, editors, music editors, director of photography, producers/ novelist.

    Lolita (1997)
At first the pace set for the film, by the sound and the wide establishing shot of the deserted countryside, is very slow and slightly melancholy. The use of the props and the makeup such as the gun and the blood portray that the must have been a murder; from this the audience has made this first assumption of the storyline; we know that someone has died and this could essentially be the ultimate climax or pivotal moment in the film. From the title sequence we can also deduce the themes and ideas of the fil are lust, love and memories- this is presented by the first character we see, who we can guess is the main character of the film. Additionally, the title of the film Lolita also creates the expectation that there is a main character who goes by this name. in terms of social groups, we as the viewers of the film can only guess that the man we first see (possible main character) is of English decent; judging by his use of language, he is most likely upper class. However, I cannot make this abrupt judgement as the film is set in a very different era therefore classes are different. Furthermore, the camera angles are not very varied and I believe that this was for effect as the film makers probably intended for the audience to focus on the countenance of man driving the car as this is very important at stimulating a reaction in the viewer.

    Order of Title Credits
Producers, Director, Main characters (Frank Langella), film title (Lolita), other supporting roles, casting director, music supervisor, music composer and orchestra.

    Friday After Next
The title sequence for FAN is very unconventional in how it begins and introduces the characters, ideas and storyline of the film.  We are first introduced to the main characters in a fast paced scene where two characters get burgled by a rogue Santa. Already the audience is made aware of what the storyline will possibly revolve around. The theme of Christmas and festivities is presented to the audience form the onset- the first camera shot is a close up shot of Santa Claus roof decoration that zooms out to reveal the rest of the well decorated home. There are a range of medium close up shots that reveal characters such as a medium close up of the rogue Santa Claus, which also effectively creates the idea that the movie will be likely set around him. Moving further into the title credits and the visuals of the credits, it is an animation created separately from the film. It is a discrete title sequence so a little story is presented before the rest of the film. It is very colourful and vibrant using the theme of Christmas lights shadowing the season- the mood set is playful and comedic. Similarly to the colour of the animated settings as well as the settings of the film world, the soundtrack uses elements of Christmas hymns and song with the use of bells, but there is a beat added and one can tell the editing of the soundtrack is adapted to fit the urban theme of the film.

    Order of Title Credits
Production companies, main characters (Ice Cube and Mike Epps), the film title (Friday After Next) supporting roles in order of appearance and importance, casting directors, costume design, music supervisors/ music, editors, production design, director of photography, associate producer, executive producers, producers.

My Possible Genre Choices

Comedy

Horror

Mystery

I have chosen these genres as my possible choices as they are the genres of films that I enjoy the most and I feel like I can create a good title sequence from these genres.

The Importamce of Sound- Task 15 (Research)

Why is sound so important in a film?

Producers aim to create a certain mood and set a tone using the extra things that appeal to most senses- specifically sound and sight. Sound is almost as equally important as the visual content of a film as it adds a depth to what is being seen on the screen. The overall job of sound is to manipulate moods and set a pace for the film. Without sound a movie does not fulfil its ultimate purpose of entertaining its audience. For example comedies use playful sound editing and soundtracks to set a lively and fun mood, however if the sound was not used or of poor quality, audiences would not necessarily experience the specific emotion according to the genre and content of that film. Many film producers believe that sometimes sound helps put across the story to the viewer, more than the video footage on its own. Sound helps to lay emphasis on particular parts of a film; it proves as one of the most useful narrative tools in a movie. In some cases the edited sound is what literally tells the story e.g.: a voice over or narrator actually introduces or tells the whole story.

Genre Shortlists.. Task 17

Here are 3 genres which I may produce for my own title sequence:

  • comedy

  • Horror

  • Action
This is because these are the popular genres amongst the rest and these genres I would like to film with.

The importance of sound.. -Task 15 (Research)

Sound is very important in films. Some say that it is the sound which creates the real fear in a movie or the catches the raw feelings of members of the audience. With sound you are essentially creating an atmosphere. For example if it was a horror movie and the ghost ran past the women, and then the music would be fast and eerie to show the thoughts and feelings of the character at this particular scene.

With sound, as a director you are in control of what feelings or thoughts the audience could be witnessing. However, not having sound in a film is a way of showing how something is not right, a fear as there is always sound involved. So not using sound for a short period of time is a good thing as it allows the audience to be alone with their thoughts and not what the director wants them to think.

Summarise findings of the genre conventions.. - Task 14 ( Research)

My favourite film -Task 8. (Research)

Home Alone 2- Lost In New York

Title sequence it uses: this movie uses a very simple title sequence. in the begining of the moviel we are sown the 20th century fox film production company logo, and soon after a plain black screen appears with what seems to be snow falling. A really big  icon of a blue house appears and the icon slowly zooms out as people involved in the making of the film are given credit. And finally the Home Alone 2  title appears with the icon of the blue house in-between Home and Alone2.

Different title openings - Task 9

 Different Title Openings

Discrete title sequences- these are a type of opening sequence that sets the mood ad tone for the rest of the film. This could be through what the audience sees in terms of imagery and hears in terms of sounds. It is very useful for building up the narrative before the film really begins. It is also seen as a mini clip beforehand because it is a little film within itself and teds to be filmed separately rather than edited in like a basic credit on screen title sequence.

Stylised title sequences- this is a sequence that involves editing to create a mood and tone for the film. The typography is edited in to fit the world of the film almost making it part of the scene. Additionally, it sets an expectation of what the film content will be- whether its horror or a romance.

Credit over of blank screen- this type of title sequence tends to not be overpowering and does not demand a lot of the audience’s attention compared to the other types of title sequence. Even though this is the case, it uses very basic techniques such as the colour and contrast of the letters against a basic background to make the audience make their own personal judgement on what the film may be about and what they expect from it.

Narrative opening- as it says in its name, a narrative title sequence opens with a voice over introducing the audience to the film. An invisible character (the narrator) is formed already before we see anyone else. From the way the speaker talks, their supposed gender etc., the audience is give the opportunity to judge what the film will be about and similarly to other types of title sequences, an expectation is set.

Non-linear- this is an unusual type of title sequence as it introduces the film abruptly starting with a scene rather than credits. This is normally typical of television shows and episodes however some films make use of it to effectively get the audience very excited to see the rest of film. This would later be followed by a presentation of the credits as they are a necessity in films.

Personally I prefer non-linear title sequences because they are more exciting and create a sense of anticipation for the rest of the film. I feel that long credits can be tedious and I enjoy jumping straight into the movie so I know what to expect rather than having to think and predict what the film is about. A film that I have watched with this type of title sequence is Friday after next which is part of the Friday trilogy. The main reason as to why I enjoyed it was because straight away I was shown that main characters and the storyline was given to me in less than two minutes.

The Title Sequence of Coraline - Task 8

The Title Sequence of Coraline
At the beginning of the film, it begins with a very eerie and slow soundtrack playing over. The first credit that is presented is the production company of the film, followed by the name of the film (Coraline). We then see the name of the actor playing the main character (Dakota Fanning) followed by the rest of the actors’ names. Initially the credits just appear one after the other against a red background which makes the title sequence seem simplistic. However, as the sequence further develops the camera follows a rag doll floating in the air and being sewed and transformed into a new doll. Simultaneously the credits continue to appear on screen on top of the doll which focuses the audience’s attention on the doll and the credits. They typography of the credits is very simple and does not do much to reflect on the movie but this could be as to not distract the audience so much from the other visuals which set up the storyline. In Coraline the type of title sequence used is a discrete title sequence as it is its own little story within itself. The camera follows a doll and its change in appearance by the long sinister hands. The visuals are disturbing and create a very small narrative before the actual film begins.
Starts off presenting the production and filming companies
Uses a variety of camera shots and angles
Close up shots of these elements of the sequence enhance the sinister tone that the film aims to set

4 Different types of film openings Task 9

There are many different types of film openings such as:

The classic opening. This includes a black screen with white titles. This gives the audience very little knowledge about the film.

Then you have the Establishing shot openings. This would just show the location of where the film is going to be or just some of where it is going to filmed. Its the very beginning of the story, so no actual acting.

You could also have the voice over film openings which are quite common. It would be like a
narrator is speaking in the background. It sometimes includes short conclusions about the plot.

Lastly you could have the non-linear narrative opening. This is where the audience is thrown into the scene either at middle or end and the movie would be about trying to find out what happened in the beginning.

Conclusion about titles sequences- Task 7

In order to make a title sequence, one worthy of actually watching and meaningful there are a few elements needed to make this happen. For example getting the right typography. Typography is the font or style of which your title, credits will be written in. Having one which goes with the story line or matches with the mood atmosphere of your film helps the audience understand a little more about your film without having to watch all of it. The typography is really important in a title sequence as it is the only written thing that will be on the screens other than the visual images. Also not just having the typography correct which matters it is also about the size of your font. As if it was too small it will be hard for the audience to actually see what it is called or even miss out key information such as the star guests in your film (the credits).

Key Plot Idea
The key plot idea in this tirrle sequence is to symbolise and visualise what happened in the past before the movie takes place. It gives us a seperate story line for us to interperut and ask questions to. These questions we ask are then answered later on in the movie. The overall idea of the title sequence is very smart as it tells us about some background information of the characters before we are actually Introuced to them.

Storyline
The storyline is introduced with the main plot at the beginging then we are shown the main charcters parents through a title sequence and their lives. After the title sequence we are the resumed back intob the story which leads us on to being introduced to the characters and their roll in the story.

Charcters
We are only introduced to 2 of the main characters in the opening which one dies. This is not only unusal but is a smart move as it leads the audience to think what is going on why did that happen and makes them makes them more intrueged to know what is happening.

What is Genre? Task 10

GENRE PREFERENCES:

I prefer action movies as they often aspire to keep the the viewer interested by lots of scenery Changes fast camera movies and short clips. An action movie is also mainly about environment to create a certain type of feel and uses music often to determine whats about to happen or what is happening. A wide range of shots are often used to portray emotions and show detail of the environment.
For example in this particular movie 'Watchmen' a lot of closeups and slow motions effects are used to make the fight scenes look more effective and brutal. In this image it shows one of the main character's face to show the importance and serious this character is.

I also like horror as they focus on camera elements in order to create a sinister atmosphere and example of this would be the medium shots that they use to show someone is behind the character but still keeping a good angle on the main character.
