Purpose of a title sequence and film opening (planning)

'what is the purpose of a title sequence and film opening'

The purpose of a title sequence is to show what the movie is going to be about, well at least a glimpse of what is yet to come. This could be introducing the main characters, or location or thoughts and visual images about the movie. A title sequence tells the audience who directed the movie, and if there was any special guest who participated in the movie.

An example of a film opening is 'the girl with the dragon tattoo'. It starts off with the loud thrilling music with nothing on the screens and then it shows the audience that it is by Colombia and a Scot Rudin production. It then begins to show snap shots of metal things such as sewages and needles. Also there is a liquid pouring over items which could illustrate the ink of the tattoo over the girl (main characters) flesh. By showing us these images in the film opening lets the audience mind wonder upon what is actually going to be happening in the movie, so it could be a stimulus.
