Sound is very important in films. Some say that it is the sound which creates the real fear in a movie or the catches the raw feelings of members of the audience. With sound you are essentially creating an atmosphere. For example if it was a horror movie and the ghost ran past the women, and then the music would be fast and eerie to show the thoughts and feelings of the character at this particular scene.
With sound, as a director you are in control of what feelings or thoughts the audience could be witnessing. However, not having sound in a film is a way of showing how something is not right, a fear as there is always sound involved. So not using sound for a short period of time is a good thing as it allows the audience to be alone with their thoughts and not what the director wants them to think.
