Types of film opening? Task 9

4 Different types of film openings are:

  • Collage opening
This may include a layered pictures/scenes; This can be particularly useful when trying to tell a background story using pictures like photographs which would sync into the movie nicely. This may also be used to relate to characters from the movie. For example, a psychotic person may have loads of pictures of victims and here a collage opening could be used to reveal the character ad what he has done and to make him seem more sinister

  • Montage Opening
Here is layering loads of images and scenes to create tension. Something close to a montage but isn't a opening is a trailer, which is lots of scenes in order to give a taste of the movie and keep you excited. However a montage opening can be used to simulate flash backs to tell a story before the movie begins.

  • A Voice Over Opening
A voice over opening is simply someone talking over a scene. This can be effective as it can be done in a ,narrative way of describing what is happening in a particular scene, introducing characters into the movie. Another interesting way this can be achieved is by using the main characters voice for voice over opening scene as this way we feel more connected to the character almost like we are inside his head hearing his thoughts.

  • Music Video Opening
This is when music and words appear in the opening credits and the music is related to the movie. This can be a good opening and interesting if done in the right way for example. A movie that starts with banging loud hip hop with plain and simple text could give off a feel of the main character eg a hood person/ gang member not growing up with much having a simplistic life style.
