Genre Preferences - Task 10

Genre preference 1: Horror

Conventions:

1. The film is normally set in a dark and sinister setting such as a small deserted or secluded town or a towering abandoned, neglected house. Typically horror films try to imbed the idea of loneliness and seclusion from the rest of the world so this is used with the setting. Further examples include

2. The characters tend to include a main character who is innocent and previously lived a very simple life and they move or find themselves coming to the eerie setting.

3.  The camerawork varies from handheld which does not allow the audience to see everything that is happening so that things in the scene come as a shock to them as it happens to the main character who is usually a victim of the horror. additionally the editing as well as the shots and angles are used to build tension and suspense for the different events that take place during the film.

Examples of Horror Films

1. Sinister

2. Final Destination Franchise

Genre Preference 2: Dark Fantasy

Conventions
  1. They tend to always have a happy ending at the end of the film whereby ‘good’ always prevails and the main character who is of a good nature is happy and ‘lives happily ever after’.
  2. Another convention of fantasy film is the very simplistic and almost basic plot that sticks to very traditional ideologies for example in Disney movies there’s always a strong hero and a damsel in distress or someone trying to discover themselves as a person.
  3. Lastly a typicality of fantasy films is the use of mythological creatures, magic and an overall escape from reality. Characters often live or find themselves being surrounded by made up people, beings and settings.

Examples of films in this genre that I have enjoyed
  1. Coraline
  2. Lord of the Rings
  3. Harry Potter

    Genre preference 3: Comedy

    Conventions
  1. The settings of this genre are usually very bright to put across the very jovial tone of the film genre. A lot of films are set in very exciting and buzzing places like a high school or a city etc.
  2. When it comes to camerawork, shots and editing, comedic films are thought to be very being naturalistic as they don’t depend solely on what angles and editing portray, but on the script and the act of making audiences laugh with the comedy itself.
  3.  Props, sounding and lighting are also used for effect and to emphasise the comedy also.

Examples of films in this genre I have enjoyed
  1. Mortdecai
  2. Pitch Perfect Franchise
