Why is
sound so important in a film?
Producers aim to create a certain mood and set a tone using
the extra things that appeal to most senses- specifically sound and sight. Sound
is almost as equally important as the visual content of a film as it adds a
depth to what is being seen on the screen. The overall job of sound is to manipulate moods
and set a pace for the film. Without sound a movie does not fulfil its ultimate
purpose of entertaining its audience. For example comedies use playful sound
editing and soundtracks to set a lively and fun mood, however if the sound was
not used or of poor quality, audiences would not necessarily experience the
specific emotion according to the genre and content of that film. Many film
producers believe that sometimes sound helps put across the story to the viewer, more than the video footage on its own. Sound helps to lay emphasis on
particular parts of a film; it proves as one of the most useful narrative tools
in a movie. In some cases the edited sound is what literally tells the story
e.g.: a voice over or narrator actually introduces or tells the whole story.
